The HHWNC 2007 Board has been hard at work since our elections last December. We have some enthusiastic new board members working along side some who have been involved in this process since its inception.
One of our main goals this year is to continue our Outreach campaign and spread the word throughout our "borders" to involve more residents and businesses and people involved in our community with HHWNC. Once again we are producing the Splash Bash event with Hollywood & Highland Complex. The date is Thursday, June 21st from 7 -10 pm. Spread the word to your neighbors and business associates to JOIN HHWNC and participate!
We continue to work with our adjacent Hollywood-area neighborhood councilsas well as new stakeholders to find solutions to issues that impact us across the community and in our own backyards. Currently, there are several issues that have come to the Board's attention through work at the committee level.
T he HHWNC along with the Department of Recreation and Parks and the Runyon Canyon Park Advisory Board are trying to help facilitate a plan for Runyon Canyon. This is a difficult task, as there are many strong and opposing voices, all with different ideas for the park. As a public resource, we feel everyone's thoughts about the park should be heard. The HHWNC is compiling numerous park proposals that will be voted on by the Community through our Committees and then by our Board before being presented to the City. Be sure to check out our meeting schedule for agendas specific to this issue (Area 6).
Each month representatives from the HHWNC meet with Councilman Tom LaBonge and leaders of other neighborhood councils in Council District 4 (CD4) to discuss issues we all face. Per the Mayor, all neighborhood councils will present their top 5 priorities to a group representing all councils citywide which will whittle down the overall list to 5 priorities for the entire city. Our top 5 priorities are as follows:
- Street Improvements and repairs. Make improvements in the repair and resurfacing of our streets, curb construction and sewage treatment on residential streets.
- Police. Add more police deployed on foot patrol and in community satellite offices to improve response time.
- Traffic. Improve infrastructure transportation and traffic flow on all streets in our area.
- Homeless. Create workable solutions for the homeless population in our area.
- Schools. Cut class size. Reward teachers who produce higher scoring students with salary increases. Offer after school vocational skill and job training to provide job placement in city infrastructure. Provide better lighting and patrol on campuses.
Stay tuned to our Website for more specifics on the budget priority survey. We are also working with Council Member Eric Garcetti's office on mitigating the impact from Hollywood Boulevard closures. Each month Mr. Garcetti's office holds a Task Force meeting made up of neighborhood council leaders, DOT staff, police, and other Hollywood officials to review Hollywood Blvd. event proposals. We have been working hard to limit the number of closures and to improve the flow of traffic when closures do occur as well as setting rules and regulations for the events that take place.
These are only a few of the things going on right now in the HHWNC. Check-out a meeting with a topic that interests you to see what else is going on in the council. If you have an issue that isn't on one of our meeting agendas, please direct it to the appropriate Committee Chair or present your concern at that committee meeting to determine how to add it to a future agenda.
The HHWNC is YOUR Neighborhood Council and it is here to empower YOU!
