The Youth Development & Recreational Resources Committee met on Thursday, May 8, 2008. The meeting was attended by seven stakeholders. One would think there are no issues in our issue area!
An update was provided on the P.U.P project. 50 people have participated so far. Feedback from park users’ is positive. People would like us to help find solutions to help keep the side streets on the way up to the canyon, freer from dog poop. Suggestions include: posting signs about L.A.M.C. enforcement and providing bag dispensers. The committee will ask the HHWNC to purchase another 50 t-shirts for the P.U.P project.
Park Rangers Steur and Rosas informed the committee about the mayor’s proposed budget which cuts the park rangers by 50%. Our committee motioned to write a letter in opposition of the proposed Recreation & Parks budget. Motion approved.
Stakeholders are urged to contact city hall and oppose the budget.
We also discussed launching a litter prevention campaign aimed at youth. We will continue to develop this idea. Also, there is a shortage of trash bins around Hollywood and apparently, city employees to pick up the trash. We would like to propose a plan to involve private businesses in the Adopt-A-Basket program to help, and possibly in an “Adopt-A-Park” program.
Jarone Johnson asked that this committee support the proposal that the HHWNC grant the Durant Branch Library money for books, PAL money for mats and Yucca Park Community Center money for special events. We are awaiting proposals.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
