The Youth Development, Education and Recreational Resources committee and its collaborators launched the P.U.P. project in Runyon Canyon on Saturday, November 3, 2007.
The event was just the start of an ongoing project which aims to increase park users’ awareness of the importance of picking up dog poop.
A summary is as follows:
-Girls of GROWTH Foundation designed fliers and t-shirts
-Homeboy Industries printed t-shirts
-12 youth service providers in Hollywood were
contacted and invited to attend, one did, three
others will join for Phase 2 (monthly P.U.P.
cleanup, GROWTH, Hollywood PAL and Yucca)
-All committee email subscribers were invited
-Ralph’s donated plastic bags for us to pass out
-All participants who signed in for our Big Sunday clean up were invited
-25 stakeholders, including 10 youth, participated
in the meeting and clean up, while several park
users grabbed fliers and bags and did their part
-Five new stakeholders added to Youth Committee list
-Dozens of people stopped by the table to give a
thumbs up and comment on the issue (and others)
– tons of support, many thanks, interest in NC
FOR NEXT TIME…
-We will set up a large bowl of water at our table
to attract dogs, and therefore dog owners, and
we’ll give biscuits to the dogs so they don’t feel
singled out 🙂
-We’ll ask Ralph’s to donate the water and add
them as a collaborator
-We’ll do a better job persuading youth service providers to commit to the project, and we’ll work more closely with the schools to reach parents and encourage their participation
Collaborators for the project:
HHWNC, GROWTH Foundation, Girl Scout Troop #3500, Recreation & Parks, Woman’s Club of Hollywood, Hollywood PAL, and Council District 4.
*Special thanks to Michael Wallace, Park Ranger Pete Steur, and to Senior Maintenance Supervisor, Javier Solis.
The Committee passed a motion requesting that the HHWNC reimburse GROWTH Foundation for cost of the project.
